Don’t Sweat The Launch

I’d like to talk to you about the vaunted mythical urban legend that is the podcast launch that is SO AMAZINGLY AWESOME right out of the gate that you hit New and Noteworthy, go viral, get sponsorships left and right. It’s beautiful, it’s amazing, and it almost never happens. So, statistically speaking, it’s not going to happen to you or I.

Recently, the Infinite Dial study for 2019 was released, and it says that fifty-five percent of the podcasters out there are still independent. It’s the big media folks and the marketers that you hear about the most, and I despise them with every bit of my soul, but I’m heartened to learn that indie podcasters are still the majority.

A lot of the people that come to me with the intention of starting a podcast all worry about how to launch it so that it starts awesome right from the gate. I don’t want you to worry about hitting it big right out of the gate. The only thing I want you to do, the only thing you NEED to do…is your podcast. Just start.

There are some important parts of putting together a podcast that you should consider, of course: WHO are you podcasting, WHAT are you podcasting about, WHY are you podcasting?

Have you submitted to the directories like Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, and Spotify?

Who is your hosting platform? Is it Libsyn, Simplecast, Spreaker, Podbean, or somewhere else? That can make a difference if you choose to move somewhere down the road.

What’s the length of your podcast?

These are all things that you need to consider, but if you’re trying to hit the ground running and aiming at New and Noteworthy or trying to go viral at the very beginning, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG. That’s one of the very few times you will ever see those words from me, but that’s one I feel very strongly about Chasing popularity, likes, downloads, or money is not the reason to do any of this, and it’s the quickest way to failure.

How do you do it right? Just do your podcast. That’s it. It’s really simple, and yet people try to make this difficult. Be authentic, be real, be vulnerable, and just do it.

Don’t worry about the other guys. You’re not in competition with them. Don’t worry about anyone who tells you that’s not the way to podcast. None of us are an authority. Just worry about you and your show, be consistent and engaging with your audience, and while it may take a while, you’ll grow.

Don’t sweat the launch. Just do the show.
