A Possible Return To The Old Days

I might be overthinking things a bit. That’s part of my problem with biting off more than I can chew some of the time. I’m almost a month into this writing challenge, and I can feel myself fighting it. There’s a certain amount of resistance coming in now, and not of the Stephen Pressfield War of Art variety, just that I’m fighting myself on the kinds of things I want to write. Finally, however, I might have stumbled upon the answer.

I had a lot of fun writing the Grumpy Old Man Does an IG Live because it was a funny character piece. Of course, your mileage may vary on the funny part, but you do you. It reminded me of a lot of my work early in my radio and subsequent podcasting career, where I wrote character pieces for the show. Later, it became second nature to improv those characters because I had done them for so long, and I realized I had missed writing humor.

So maybe the answer is going back to writing humor? A post a day trying to be funny? It couldn’t hurt, but what to write? All my heroes come from a world of satire. Walt Kelly, Jeff MacNelly, Garry Trudeau, Berke Breathed, Phil Hendrie, these are masters of the game. Especially Breathed, who took the world as a whole and its problems and mashed it into the absurd world of Bloom County. I did that with WYRD 101 and The Pungoverse for over twenty years before I burned out on it.

Maybe it’s time to dust off the wit and see what I can do with it.

Stay tuned, as they say
